I adore the way that human figures give scale to this grand, glorious landscape around us. Small figures in a big world remind me how small a part of this world we are, and yet our impacts on it can still have huge impacts at Mojave National Preserve

In 1989 my good friend Silvio Gallo led the first kayak descent of Chile’s Rio Claro right to the lip of this waterfall called 🐌. At that time, they desperately climbed out of this gorge that appeared improbable. Incredibly 3 decades later Silvio is able to return to this magical El Caracol to paddle down and beyond memory lane. Felicitaciones amigo! #foreveryoung #liveyouradventure @jackson.kayak

So... @samharrisorg says in a @wakingupcourse that, "It can't be any other way; the expectation that it can or should be some other way is a great source of unnecessary suffering." 🙏 It's not hard imagine having complete and utter acceptance of the moment when you are standing above the fog, looking back at snowcapped mountain tops, and feeling soft, warm sunshine kisses all over your face! 😉 This is Jason on his first adventure of the year trying not to resist the (amazing) moment. 😄🌄 #SpreadTheBliss at Banff National Park

Last month we explored parts of Vancouver Island in search of old growth trees and found some beautiful giants in the soggy rain. Sadly these trees are still being logged at an alarming rate even though they are essential to functional ecosystems. Recently, the opportunity to document a prescribed burn @caprockcanyonsstatepark presented itself. I joined @bryce_spangler and @ricky.lewis in the efforts of capturing the event conducted over the course of two days. These shots are from day one, when the internal areas of the park were being burned. Since European settlement, the prairie and canyon lands have experienced fire suppression. The lack of fire has allowed invasive vegetation to become prominent. These controlled burns are paired with other clearing methods to return these lands and it's flora back to its original nature. For scale of the massive burn, the second photo is a crop that shows one of the firefighters directly infront of the burn. If you look closely you will see a faint yellow spec next to the smoke clouds. Be sure to check out @bryce_spangler and @ricky.lewis page for a link to their YouTube video! #igtexas #texasgram #betteroutside #lifeisbetteroutside #txstateparks #findyourpark #traveltexas #texastodo #visittexas #texasmonthly #texasfever #ig_discover_wildlife #ig_texas #wildernessphotography #wildlifebiologist #wildexplorersclub #wildernessnation #livefolk #liveyouradventure #liveboldly #ourwild #outdoorwoman #outdoorbella #andshedopetoo #radgirlscollective #freshairandfreedom at Caprock Canyons State Park

Nice solitary birthday turns in the alpine today. It was great to get all the letters since Saturday given the ⛰ ❄conditions. All human powered, 7.5k vertical feet. And I am really starting to get a hang of BD Helio 88s as my powder skis. Last week I shared the vertical 5 × 7 version of this photograph-this is a 8 × 10, taken a few minutes after the previous post. Both images are similar in many ways, but there is one main difference. This image was taken landscape orientation, meaning that the image is wider. You can see things on each side of the built up ice formations that are not visible in the portrait orientation of the last post. . . This post is wider and you can see more of the image, the other is closer up focusing more on the detail. “There is nothing quite like the creative process—the taking of an idea you’ve carried around in your heart and imagination and laboring over it until you’ve brought it to bear. One moment you feel enraptured by the process, the next, tortured by it. Those who create can journey to places of exhilarating, exhausting, painfully stretching, and deeply vulnerable, the highest emotional heights and the lowest emotional lows and everywhere in between. But few things can compare to the deep sense of satisfaction that washes over our souls when we behold our final, completed work. Creativity is certainly not for the faint of heart, but create we must. To refuse is to deny our nature.” // @jeremymriddle // “The Choice To Create” Cultivate Vol. 4 at Crestview, Florida

“We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate. We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed. And we travel, in essence, to become young fools again- to slow time down and get taken in, and fall in love once more.” -Pico Iyer at Icefields Parkway, Banff, Alberta, Canada

For as long as I can remember, I've associated the pansy flower with my grandpa because every spring he'd plant them around various trees on his property. According to floral linguists, the pansy represents ideas, thought, renewal, creativity, contemplation, and remembrance. My dear grandpa was a bit of an inventor, a crafty creative, a considerate charmer, honored tradition, and a free thinker to boot, so this "floral association" doesn't surprise me. Today marks five years since my grandpa's passing, but I know he's always with me. One day last summer (2017), something inside of me called for a leisurely drive. While aimlessly navigating the back roads, I approached a local greenhouse and quickly pulled into their driveway. For over forty-five minutes, I browsed their inventory before spotting the perfect potted [assorted] plant. All of the flowers were beautiful, but three precious, precocious, purple and yellow pansies primarily drew me toward that particular plant. Once home, the potted plant was immediately placed on the freshly tilled soil, and I began singing the flowers' praises. That became a daily practice, one I felt connected me to my grandpa, for months. Winter arrived and the last of the potted soil froze, which saddened me, but I knew spring promised more pansies. Soon enough, the grass turned from yellow to green and little plants popped up, one being a pansy. There wasn't a single pansy in the grass last year, so that surprised me. Within a week, a crop of pansies sprouted in the grass extending to the soil. I couldn't believe it. My heart blossomed with joy. Come summer, I uprooted and replanted (or potted) over forty pansies! To me, that [further] confirmed my grandpa continues to drop thoughtful little hints he's always watching over me. I love you forever, Grandpa. at Maine
